HUNT WRITE UP BY Colby Sarvis
WHAT TO EXPECT
South Carolina offers a variety of hunting opportunities ranging from coastal bays and marshes to inland freshwater rivers, flooded timber, swamp lands, and fresh water lakes. Wood ducks are our number one species taken everywhere except along the coastal areas. We get a wide verity of waterfowl species here. One unique thing about our state is the fact you can shoot a black duck and mallard in the flooded timber of the Pee Dee region and drive to the coast the next day and shoot a mottled duck. Hunters have opportunities at a wide range of species of puddle, diver and sea ducks. There are opportunities for draw hunts on State managed lands by permit draw only. Weather is by far the largest driving factor in season long success. While high bird numbers are not typically expected; good quality species and trophies can be taken day in and day out whether inland or along the coast.
Early/Mid/Late Season
Early to mid season temperatures vary from lows in the 50s to 30s, highs between 50-70. Late season can bring lows into the 20s with highs 40-50. Very slim chances of snow throughout the state.
Travel to hunting spots typically by small Jon boat to large bay boats for larger
water areas of coastal areas. Small creek boats or kayaks can be used in the inland backwater areas. Limited walk-in opportunities throughout the state.TARGET Species-Wood Duck, Ringneck, Green Wing Teal, Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, Black Scoter, Hooded Merganser, Canada Goose
