HUNT WRITE UP BY RYAN OLSEN
WHAT TO EXPECT
I started hunting with my best friend Keith when we were in high school and he introduced me to duck hunting at the age of 15 or 16. Keith and I have been best friends since 8th grade and was my best man at my wedding, we still get together to duck hunt in the fall, even with both of our demanding jobs and family lives. We mainly hunt public land with an occasional jaunt to an inland lake if the divers are in. Two of my boys are duck hunting now and enjoy it as well and that’s what really makes me happy, just being with them and watching them. Indiana was once known as the Everglades of the north due to all the marsh land and river bottoms, it still holds true to a point. More hunters and less land makes it a little more challenging vs 20-30 years ago, but just as rewarding when you do have a good day. The stories I’ve heard from my father in law about duck hunting in the 70’s and 80’s are almost unbelievable, but never the less, they’re not. Duck hunting has been part of my life for the past 30 years, I hope and believe that it’s going to be part of my sons lives as they grow older as well.
Duck hunting northern Indiana is challenging and yet rewarding at times. Early season you will find plenty of teal, wood duck and your resident green heads. Once the season progresses and the weather turns, it’s not unusual to harvest several species of duck on private land, river bottoms and flooded corn fields
You won’t see large numbers as in other parts of the country but the chance is always there, especially if you pay attention and put the time in to scout. Being in a colder region, you will break ice to get to your spot on more than one occasion during every season. It’s not the best, but it’s what we have and it’s what you make of it. Indiana does hold a lot of geese and is known for good numbers thanks to all the corn fields.
