HUNT WRITE UP BY HUNTER RUD
WHAT TO EXPECT
I grew up duck hunting the Mississippi River Valley in south eastern Minnesota, but after high school I started traveling to Rochester to goose hunt more often. With the endless amounts of public boat launches and walk-in areas along the Mississippi River, I can almost always rely on finding birds to hunt during any part of the season. Meanwhile, Rochester geese seem to be pretty far and few between up until mid November and through December, when the weather finally decides to get nasty and push the birds out of Canada. Overall the south eastern part of the state can hold both great duck hunts and great goose hunts if you aren’t afraid to put on the miles scouting in your truck, boat, and boots.
Great amounts of public boat ramps along the Mississippi.
Boat or Canoe is recommended if you intend to hunt the river.
Boat less hunts can also be found along the river if you don't mind a good hike through mud, swamp, and woods.
Permission around Rochester is very difficult to get. Most fields are leased by outfitters or have been hunted by locals for years.
For not very much money, you can get a spot in a local outfitters pit.
large spreads and multiple good callers are what the rochester geese are use to seeing/hearing
