WHAT TO EXPECT
I started hunting ducks on small creeks and geese in corn and wheat fields while growing up in Colorado. I was fortunate enough to have access to some great private ground and also had friends that had great places to hunt, that being said, some of the best duck hunting I have ever experienced has come off of public walk-in access. There are miles of public river across that state that can have unbelievable duck and goose hunting on it. During peak migration times Colorado will hold a great number of Canadas across the entire state. Weather depending, Colorado can have very good dry field duck hunting. Most times they seem to feed right at shooting light in the evenings but you can catch them making a mistake on a bad weather day or when there is snow on the ground. Those who have grown up hunting geese in Colorado have learned how to hunt very high pressured birds as the number of waterfowl hunters in the state continue to grow.
Colorado hunting can experience crazy weather swings from early season all the way till the last day of season. Some years it can have a more mild winter and others could see a couple feet of snow covering the ground at once.
Over the years day to day permission has gotten harder to come by as most goose hunting on private land is done out of leased pits while running traffic on Canada geese and duck hunting is done on leased sloughs and river sections.
Although private land is becoming harder to acquire, Colorado is filled with thousands of acres of public hunting access. These hunting spots include Lakes, rivers, sloughs and crop fields that will hold birds all year.
In Colorado the main birds hunted are Canada geese and ducks. There are many different species of ducks to be had especially while hunting on the big lakes. Colorado will also see a small number of snow geese move throughout the state.
